The Lure of Chaos: Discordianisms

07/30/98

This week I'd like to welcome one of two new categories to Alternative Religions: Discordianism.

Discordianism is hard to define.  It's a belief that chaos, or disorder, is as vital to the universe as order and harmony.  The patron goddess of Discordians is Eris, the Greek goddess of Discord.  Her message, that a little chaos is good for the universe, is contained in the sacred text of Discordians, the Principia Discordia.  The Principia, despite being somewhat incoherent, also contains details of the conspiracy of the Universe, the plot to stamp out all Discord and maintain perfect order.

The Discordians are as lively and fun as the are unpredictable.  They practice what Eris preaches.  They avoid the conspiracy of Order while bringing Chaos to the universe as best they can. Or, as Ben Cochran puts it: "We act weird and we think it might be cool if you did, too."
